A “hive” is to a troll as what a house is to a human. After stumbling out of the brooding caverns and getting registered, a troll is assigned a crew to construct their hive and work gets under way post haste. After all, now that you’re above ground, you need some kind of shelter!
Now, hive construction is not just free-form “I want one bedroom and twelve baths” nonsense. Each hemo type is assigned a specific maximum floor plan. The drones will allow some wiggle room within reason, like a high blood getting a jacuzzi installed on their back patio or a lowblood shoving their bed in the kitchen so they can have a living room, but this is not a free for all. As all starting hives are government funded, there are limits put in place to control spending and remain within certain budgets allocated to public services.
The given budget will cover the drone labor, supplies, furniture, amenities, and decorations. The foreman drone on a given kid’s construction crew will provide the kid catalogs appropriate to their blood color to peruse and compile their wishlist. From there, the kid sits back and waits for the magic to happen. The drones will prioritize construction and facilities before frivolous amenities and decorations, ensuring that kids don’t make too big of mistakes with their new freedom and decision-making power.
Once through, the drones will leave the young troll to their own devices. Welcome to Dangerprone, kid.
Why are starting hives restricted?
Dangerprone strives to be an engaging and rewarding experience for those interested in participating in the role play aspects of the shop. The baseline is that these limits help solidify our foundation and create a more reactive world. In more detail, the reasons are....
Each hemo type is given a floor plan mapping out the maximum allotted space for their hive. Trolls are still allowed to decorate as they see fit but keep in mind that their budget for decor and furniture should make sense for their blood caste. We’re trusting people to use their discretion about what makes sense for the troll to be able to afford on their stipend based on the baseline given here.
As a foregone conclusion, all hives are equipped with indoor plumbing and electricity - we’re not savages. However, it’s not unusual for the quality of the lines for low bloods to leave something to be desired.
The base requirements of any hive are: sleeping apparatus, toilet, bathing apparatus, stove, & sink. The drones will not allow a hive to be built that does not accommodate these needs. There is some wiggle room within floor plans that a troll that has a separate kitchen and bedroom could, for example, put their bed in the kitchen and use what would have been their bedroom as a living room. All other accommodations and furnishings are subject to the budget of the hemotype.
Accompanying any hive are lusus accommodations. These are non-optional and a child’s lusus must be afforded some level of shelter. For low bloods, this is a separate shelter from the hive only build large enough to protect their head from the elements. For high bloods, this shelter is integrated into the hive itself with appropriate space to fit the lusus.
At the lowest rung of the hemospectrum, rust bloods receive the smallest budget for their hives. These hives are the bare minimum of needs and are generally considered to be the homes of the impoverished. One rust blood went on the record to describe their hive allotment as a “dirty box with a window.”
Rooms: 1 small room w/ toilet/shower partition
Additions: None
Material Quality: Poor
Lusus Accommodations: Doghouse
Bronze bloods are a single step up from the rust, meaning there’s some additional benefits, but not much. Still, you get the basic necessities and even some extra elbow room. Distant aliens of Earth would consider this home the equivalent of a trailer or RV home.
Rooms: 1 room w/ toilet/shower partition
Additions: None
Material Quality: Poor
Lusus Accommodations: Doghouse
At gold, you start having enough room to own a couch and still be able to walk around the house. At the very least, everything is close at hand. Distant aliens of Earth would consider this home analogous of a shitty studio apartment.
Rooms: 1 large room, 1 bathroom (no bathtub)
Additions: None
Material Quality: Low
Lusus Accommodations: Doghouse
The highest rung of what are considered to be low bloods, lime is where accommodations really begin to improve. With more than one room in the house, it’s a whole different ballpark than the piddly stipend of gold and below.
Rooms: 1 room/kitchenette, 1 small bedroom, 1 bathroom (no bathtub)
Additions: Front porch
Material Quality: Low
Lusus Accommodations: Doghouse
At the lowest tier of midbloods, olive get better materials, indoor lusus housing, and a front porch. It’s a distinct step up from low blood accomodations and moke for some of the coziest looking neighborhoods.
Rooms: 1 room w/ conjoined kitchen, 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom (no bathtub)
Additions: Front porch
Material Quality: Moderate
Lusus Accommodations: Integrated; Minimal
With a long history of special service to the continued wellbeing of the species, you’d better expect jade gets a nice starting package. Jade is the lowest hemo type with the space and allowance for a bathtub.
Rooms: 1 room, 1 kitchen, 1 bedroom, 1 master bathroom
Additions: Front porch, 1 closet
Material Quality: Moderate
Lusus Accommodations: Integrated; Minimal
At the first step into the top half of the hemo spectrum, teal begin boasting the nixe kind of hives that you envy. They’ve got space and the beetled to fill it. With the addition of a down stairs, it’s a distinctive step up from any lower hemo type.
Rooms: 1 large room, 1 kitchen, 1 bedroom, 1 master bathroom
Additions: Front porch, 1 walk-in closet, deck/patio, cellar
Material Quality: Moderate
Lusus Accommodations: Integrated; Average
While historically considered the first rung of “nobility” and technically a high blood, blue is effectively the upper middle class. They’re just high enough to get nice things, but not high enough for the good stuff. Of course, anyone lower than blue would be salivating for this kind of allotment than be complaining over it.
Rooms: 2 rooms, 1 kitchen, 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom; 2nd floor optional
Additions: Front porch, 1 walk-in closet, deck/patio, cellar
Material Quality: Moderate
Lusus Accommodations: Integrated; Average
Where indigo and blue differ is the space to comfortably host friends in their home, even overday. The second bathroom and fully furnished basement allow an indigo blood tom comfortably host events within the comfort of their own home rather than rent a venue. But when you’re rich, you’re going to rent a venue anyway, aren’t you?
Rooms: 3 rooms, 1 kitchen, 1 master bedroom, 1 guest room, 2 bathrooms (1 master bath); 2nd floor optional
Additions: Front porch, 2 closets or 1 walk-in closet, deck/patio, basement
Material Quality: High
Lusus Accommodations: Integrated; Average
At purple, we see the royalty of the troll race. While not as grand as their seafaring counterparts, purple is the highest in the pecking order of the land locked members of the species. Their floor plan differs from indigo in additional facilities to house their lusus and finer material to produce the kind of finish that screams “I’m better than you.”
Rooms: 3 rooms, 1 kitchen, 1 master bedroom, 1 guest room, 2 bathrooms (1 master bath); 2nd floor optional
Additions: Front porch, 3 closets or 1 walk-in closet & 1 closet, large deck/patio, basement
Material Quality: High
Lusus Accommodations: Integrated; High end
Whether violet chooses to build on land or in the sea, their hives are even sparlier than a purple blood’s. Only the finest and most opulent materials are used on these hives, primarily to assert dominance and provide an appropriately rich living experience to our high bloods.
Rooms: 3 rooms, 1 large kitchen, 1 master bedroom, 2 guest room, 2 bathrooms (1 master bath); 2nd floor optional
Additions: Front porch, 1 walk-in closet & 2 closets, large deck/patio, basement
Material Quality: Best
Lusus Accommodations: Integrated; High end
The best of the best, the cream of the crop, the height of opulence and luxury - fuchsia bloods get only the best, even as children. Their hives are no small feat, with huge amounts of space to host parties of friends or enemies. Only one will be the Queen, but hell, doesn't mean the rest of them don’t live in style.
Rooms: 3 rooms, 1 ballroom, 1 large kitchen, 1 master bedroom, 3 guest room, 2 bathrooms (2 master bath); 3rd floor optional
Additions: Front porch, 2 walk-in closet & 1 closets, large deck/patio, large basement
Material Quality: Best
Lusus Accommodations: Integrated; Luxury
Some trolls, for whatever reason, may elect to build a smaller hive than their allotment allows. In these cases, the troll is able to put the extra beetles towards slightly nicer furnishings or somewhat improved material quality.
To be clear, these are not limits seeking to restrict users, but simply your base starting hive. Over time, as games and rewards unlock, the opportunity to upgrade your hive will make an appearance. Even a rust blood can have a sprawling mansion in time. But like many things in Dangerprone, those additions are things you earn through roleplay and participation.
The ability to upgrade hives through purchase is not yet available. However, in future events and games, you may find hive upgrades to be listed as a prize.
You may have noticed that a "2nd floor" is only available to blue and up. What constitutes a 2nd floor though? Why would a lowblood not be allowed to stack rooms if it's more cost efficient and takes up less real estate? Well, actually they can, but it's not considered a 2nd floor.
To clarify, a 2nd floor includes a proper staircase and a hallway leading to or connecting the upstairs rooms.
A level is simply a room stacked on top of another. When you add levels to your hive, they do not come with a staircase and require other means to get to that level, such as a ladder or an attic-esque trapdoor.
In this manner, teal and below can have "levels" in their hives, but they will not have a nice integrated way to get to that level. For blue and above, they get the floor plan allotment to allow for a nice staircase and the hall naturally connecting the rooms.
*other options to be added at staff discretion
While not the standard way of things, some trolls elect to live together to pool resources or stick close to friends. This is most commonly seen with lowbloods, as it affords them some extra space.
When a shared hive is being constructed, it uses the floor plan of whichever troll has the highest hemotype. Then, for each additional troll living with them, a bedroom is added on. In this way, if a gold and rust blood bunked together, the hive would be constructed with the floorplan of a gold blood plus one bedroom for their roommate. If Three teal bloods lived together, it would be a hive constructed with the floor plan of a teal blood hive, plus two additional bedrooms.
If the leech hoping to house with you is a blood mutant who has no stipend at all, no additional bedroom is built. It’s not uncommon for blood mutants to indenture themselves to other trolls as servants in exchange for a roof over their head and food.
Analogous to the alien concept of an “apartment complex,” communal hive stems stack multiple hives atop each other to create more space efficient housing. These are typical of cities and more heavily populated areas. Business districts make use of similar architecture for renting space to set up shops or offices. Usually, if a troll builds into a stem, they opt to downgrade on space to increase their quality of furnishing.
Each location a troll can build a hive in will list whether stems are available.
Analogous to the alien concept of a “dorm apartment” communal hive stacks are broader and more packed than hive stems. Communal hive stacks are facilities that have generic housing, usually of a single hemo type quality, and the hives are leased to other trolls by a stack keeper. Communal hive stacks occur from a troll commissioning drone labor for construction and are one of the only buildings not directly owned by the imperial government. Tenants of a hive stack are expected to repay the kindness of the stack keeper in some way, ranging from favors, servitude, or rent. Typically, these are owned and operated by a high blood, but any troll whose frugal and clever enough could construct one. Something to keep in mind is that a communal hive stack keeper is expected to pay rent to the government to retain ownership of the space. Communal hive stacks are typically privately owned and operated facilities, but military barracks are considered to be communal hive stacks and when a keeper dies, the empire has been known to seize and continue operations of a stack.
Each location will list if there are hive stacks available for lease. Note that living in a hive stack means paying rent or indenturing yourself to the stack keeper in some way, unless explicitly stated otherwise.
Trolls come and go, live and die, but their possessions and hives are still here. Sometimes, rather than construct a whole new hive, kids are given the option to repurpose. Drones will never advertise hive above your hemotype to you. By choosing to repurpose an old hive, you have no say in the hive layout or furnishings, but you still get to redecorate a bit. Benefits are that you can usually find some nifty junk in the old owner’s possessions, or there may be upgrades the hive has gone through that you don’t have to pay for.
Each location will list if there are any abandoned hives to repurpose, and for what hemo types they’re available to. You may elect to repurpose a hive below your hemotype, but never above. By electing to repurpose a hive, you forfeit any say in furnishings and layout. Instead, staff will provide you with your hive description and any goodies you may or may not find.
Sometimes, there are trolls hatched under special circumstances who may have other options available to them. These options will be made clear by staff at the time of the troll being given out and you may cite permission to deviate from the standard housing.
These circumstances are often story/meta related and are occasional not options, so much as requirements. These specific instructions will supersede the general guidelines provided in this thread.
