What is the troll?
Ahh the troll, the height of civilized life in the universe, the epitome of a higher life form. Humble and amazing. That’s what a troll is.
The troll is what an alien might call “humanoid” in nature, possessing gray skin and yellow eyes. Trolls grow orange hued horns, dark at the base and light at the tips, of various shapes, sizes, and placement on their skull. The nature of a troll’s biology is somewhat mysterious and incredibly varied, most of these variations based on one thing: blood color.
The Hemospectrum
Many qualities of a troll are dependant on their hemotype, meaning their placement on the hemospectrum. The hemospectrum is the rainbow range of colors a troll’s blood may be, and that’s every color imaginable, though not all colors are common. A troll’s hemotype is what determines their standing in society, the higher castes being colors higher on the spectrum and the lower castes being colors lower on the spectrum. Proper and acceptable hemo types are as follows:
Given the nature of troll reproduction and the strange biology they follow, mutations of all kinds have all been seen at one point or another. A set of wings, an extra eye, an extra arm. Most commonly, these physical mutations are just anomalies in the troll makeup. Blood mutations on the other hand are rather deplorable circumstances, unable to be properly hemotyped as they fall outside of the blood caste system. As a result, they cannot be processed correctly and with their unusual blood colors, there’s no lusus to raise them. They aren’t culled, deary no. The troll race is a civilized society that doesn’t kill its own for something like that. A mutant is left to live out their lives and fend for themselves without imperial aid. Mortality rate is rather high, but that’s just how these things tend to go.
Then there are some mutations like the rainbow drinker, an evolution seemingly exclusive to jadebloods, and the quality that makes a troll an ideal caretaker for the Mother Grub.
And we’ve all heard the ghost stories and seen the robots that replace the occasional troll that has had an unfortunate accident befall them.
That’s not even mentioning some of the abilities trolls have been found to develop. Psionics, elemental kinesis, summoning the spirits of the damned, and who knows what else.
The long and the short of it is? Trolls are diverse and mysterious creatures with much to discover about them!

Before the troll come the egg. Or was it the other way around? Every troll begins as an egg, laid by a Mother Grub. All you can do is wait until the prize inside bursts its way out!
Helpless and vulnerable, isn’t the wiggler adorable? Their exterior is squishy and a little elastic, but they’re pretty easy to pop if you put weight on em just right. Best to be careful with them if you expect them to last until their first moult.
Finally! The wiggler has moulted and grown into a proper young troll! With limbs and the ability of proper speech for communication, a young troll is ready to take the world by the horns and carve out their place in the world.
Oh, it looks like your kid has hit a growth spurt! Rebellious and rowdy, the teenager is let loose upon semi-civilized society to reign terror that the children could not for lack of height and occasional age restrictions.
After their final major growth, the troll has now come into their own as an adult! Huzzah! An adult can now do adult things like purchase real estate and gamble. Except, wait, kids and teens are allowed to do that too if they have the beetles for it. Huh. What was the point of growing up again?
What’s this? It seems that’s not all! Other stages exist, but who knows what they are? Trolls are such a varied and strange species, what other possibilities could there be?
There's not enough drink in the world for me to want to put up with this shit. You want me to do you a favor? Get me something hard first.
